Old tree, new name

Ziziphus jujuba , we call it žižola in Slovene, is not a well known fruit in my country. It grows at the coastal region and can be only seldom found at food markets elsewhere. No doubt I was happy getting the opportunity to take some photos of a nice Ziziphus jujuba tree !

Fascinating enough, the species was domesticated already 11000 years ago, in South Asia. Yet the plant has got its proper scientific name just recently!

In 2006, a proposal was made to suppress the name Ziziphus zizyphus in favor of Ziziphus jujuba,[6] and this proposal was accepted in 2011.[7] Ziziphus jujuba is thus the correct scientific name for this species. from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jujube
