Portulacea grandiflora is the one I have to plant each year. I even have a big glazed pot reserved just for portulacea .The pot is on a sunny side and portulacea I plant there have to be of different colours. When new flowers bloom it looks like a bouquet is arising from the glazed pot, each day a new bouquet, as different coloured flowers bloom in various combinations. There is only one rule, portulacea are in full bloom only on sunny days, at about ten o’clock in the morning. Just a perfect time to have a Sunday morning coffee!
p.s.Check the flowers I’ve painted at my site: https://tamarajare.com/
Looking forward to seeing you! Tamara

Portulacea are wonderful flowers. I like that you call them the 10 o’clock flower.

They really have such vivid color! A neighbor of mine planted them in the square around their tree in the sidewalk last spring, but they got trampled by all the dogs in the neighborhood. It was disappointing, because the colors are just so electric.

I love them and can’t wait to plant them again, but for now it is still too cold here (at least at night). And then I will have problems, not with dogs, but with deer .Last year deer loved these flowers even more as I did …

Ahh yes, deer. We definitely don’t have that challenge in the city. 🙂

I have always loved the portulaca or as it is sometimes called Moss Rose. I especially the like the ones that are multi colored, splashed with pretty streaks. I didn’t know that about the 10:00 thing. I will have to pay more attention to mine.

I like those with colorful streaks! Right these days I am planting some more for this summer!

I don’t know, I guess it is the quality of air and light. They attract lots of moths and make a lot of seeds for the birds

I am already planning for my spring garden & I think I need portulacas. I had no idea of the 10 O’clock name. I DO have a returning plant called 4 ‘ O clocks because they bloom at 4 every evening. Now I’m wondering if they have REAL name!

I am sure they do, in Slovene language there are no such names as 4 or 10 o’clock flowers, so I cannot help you 😦

such pretty flowers, I never noticed they opened at 1000. I’ll have to pay more attention next time I see them. They look like they’d be easy to grow.

they would have to be for me, I’m never around to be able to take care of anything. So all my plants have to be able to fend for themselves.

How much water do they need?

Not much, indeed and they stand really sunny places, so they are a good choice for terraces and balconys facing south!

Curiously, in Brazil they are named Eleven O’clock. They must be lazier.
